How to Prepare Your Children for a Visit to the Doctor

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

For a child, going to the doctor may be scary, but here's some tips to calm them.

Steps

  1. Prepare them for the visit. Let them know as much as you know. Make sure they understand why they're going to the doctor.
  2. Explain to them everything that could happen (hospitals, shots, IVs, etc...) but (if you think) you can tell them it probably won't happen to them.
  3. Tell them that they'll probably have to wait in a waiting room. Teach them the proper waiting room etiquette.
  4. Make sure you tell the doctor everything. If your child is old enough, let them talk to the doctor. If you have questions, ask!
  5. Don't tell them it won't hurt, because we all know it will. Instead, tell them it will only hurt a little, and it won't hurt for a very long time.
  6. We all know bribes aren't the best way to go. However, if needles are involved, all the rules of parenting change! No tears = Chuck E. Cheese

Tips

  • Don't leave your child wondering. Make sure they have a complete understanding of everything!

Warnings

  • These tips may not work for all children.
