How to Get Rid of Lice With Orange Juice

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Many people are terrified of using lice-killing chemicals on their heads to get rid of pediculus capitis (the head louse), and especially so on their children's heads. This is understandable and in the endless search for getting rid of lice in more natural ways, one answer for you may just be orange juice, as recommended by Australian cleaning guru, Shannon Lush.
This article explains how you can give it a try; in conjunction with a lice comb and hair conditioner, this may be your solution - and as an added bonus, this is one remedy that the lice cannot become immune to!

Steps

  1. Have your child stand over a bath, basin or bowl. If you are doing your own hair, you may need a helper.
  2. Pour a cup of orange juice over the hair in the same way that you would add shampoo. Make sure it gets all of the hair and head zone, add more if needed.
  3. Leave the orange juice in place to do its work. According to Shannon Lush, the orange juice acts as a potent insecticide, killing the lice quickly and loosening the eggs off the hair.[1]
  4. Comb through the hair with a lice comb as instructed by the manufacturer. The lice should come off easily and can be disposed off by washing down the drain.
  5. Rinse through with warm water to clean hair.
  6. Use hair conditioner and the lice comb daily for the rest of the week to ensure that any last eggs are removed.

Tips

  • Shannon further recommends adding tea tree oil to the water in the basin or bath to catch any extra lice and finish them off.
  • Hair conditioner is known to suffocate lice and captures the eggs; hence why it is recommended to use it for a week after the orange juice treatment.[2] Hair mousse, gel and hairspray may also be of some assistance at creating an uninhabitable environment but stories on their success are variable.

Things You'll Need

  • Orange juice, 100% pure; lifelong packs are okay provided it is 100% orange juice[3]
  • Lice comb
  • Bath, basin or bowl of water
