Although many people debate the existence of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (M.C.S.), the people who have it don't deny that it interferes with their daily life. M.C.S. is sensitivity to a variety of chemicals (for example perfumes, household cleaners, paint, etc.). When a person with M.C.S. is exposed to certain chemicals, they may experience symptoms such as allergic reactions, respiratory problems, headaches, and nausea. How can they cope?

  3. Let your friends and workmates know that you're sensitive to certain chemicals and suggest alternative products they can use that won't bother you.
  4. When possible, avoid going to indoor events with large crowds of people, as there may be a high concentration of perfumes and other fragrances.
  5. See if the use of a personal air purifier will help, such as one that goes around your neck.
  6. If you work in an office, let your employer know that you have M.C.S. and ask the employer if he/she will allow you take certain measures to help your condition (for example open doors, bring in an air purifier, etc.).
  7. Try getting a professional detox, as it may help flush the chemicals out of your system that are bothering you.
  8. If your symptoms involve your respiratory system, see if respiratory masks that cover the nose and mouth will help.
  9. Get help from a doctor who specializes in this field. If you don't know anyone who specializes in this field, ask for a reference from your family doctor.
